Indications for parenteral nutrition at home

The inevitable indicator of long lasting parenteral nutrition is when a sickness condition is prolonged; that will cause deterioration or lack of digestion by the intestines.  In such case the patient might die from hunger.

The indicators are as follows:

-         Short Bowel Syndrome (SBS), or lack of intestines

-         Jejunostomy terminal syndrome

-         Post radiation intestines firing

-         Multilevel obstruction of adhesions of intestinal syndrome,which is not able to operative treatment.

            In Poland the main indicator for PN in at home conditions is the SBS which develops after full resection of the intestines due to a clot or thrombus of the mesenteric artery in elder patients.  Younger patients will need PN due to after surgery complications, inherent defects, injury and disturbances in thickening of the blood. All these stages are characterizing longevity of dependence of PN.  The time that PN needs to be used varies from at least 3 month to a patients live time.  Some of the patients are connected to the PN bag every day for 18 -20 hours a day; however many of the patients may be able to use PN only 2-3 days instead of everyday.
