Dangers of parenteral nutrition

Even though parenteral nutrition saves lives, it is not free of complications.  Some of the complications are as follows: septic, liver, metabolic, and toxic, also metabolic disease of the bones.  The complications are rare if the specialized groups are treating the patient.  If the complications do occur in many cases they are deadly, and must be treated immediately in a hospital with appropriate equipment.  Patients who use parenteral nutrition must go under blood examination every three moths, as well as testing of the bones.
