Profiles: Anne T.

Anne T. 37 years old, female, married, an administrator assistant was healthy until April 1996 when she developed left side Bell’s Palsy. Then her right foot became numb. She was quite concerned and thought about MS. Her MD dismissed that idea. Two weeks later her face was normal, numbness disappeared. Tingling sensation in her right foot persisted.

In June 1996 her left upper extremity became numb and weak. Soon after that she became numb and weak from her waist down. She saw her neurologist. An MRI scan of her brain showed multiple areas with increased T2 weighted signals in left corpus callosum and in posterior periventricular region bilaterally. Cerebrospinal fluid contained 3 oligoclonal bands, increased IgG synthesis and high IgG/Albumin index. She was treated with intravenous Methylprednisolone (IV MP) for one week. During that week her symptoms started to diminish after 4 days. She was also diagnosed with a urinary tract infection and treated with Cypro. As long as she took Cypro she felt confused and unsteady. After that she improved further. Only some tingling sensation persisted in her right hand.

In September 1997 she delivered a healthy son. In October 1997 she started injections of Betaseron. She was doing well.

In August 1998 she was advised to quit Betaseron treatment by her MD. At about the same time she developed new tingling in her left upper extremity. She was treated with outpatient IV MP, but did not complete treatment. She was free from symptoms till September 1998 when her left upper extremity over few days became completely paralyzed and flaccid. Her left lower extremity was slightly weaker with increased reflexes on that side.

She received an outpatient one week treatment with high dose IV MP tapered later orally at home. She also started injections of Avonex. She developed severe sinus congestion and was treated with Tetracycline with Vit. B comp. supplement. Within a month she markedly improved although complained of persisting numbness in her right upper extremity. She received monthly 1 gram IV MP injections four times. All symptoms disappeared. She was doing well. She continues to be free of symptoms. She continues injections of Avonex and vitamin supplements.

Since September 1998 we have been discussing necessary changes in her life style including healthy nutrition, as well as daily physical and visualization exercises. We performed breathing exercises and the patient was encouraged to meditate. She is free from symptoms. Her vision improved to the point that she does not need her reading glasses anymore. She stays happy. She rests a lot. Her life is much better organized than ever before. She has learned how to deal with her stressful work. Her marriage is now much happier. She is a happy mother. She does her daily exercises, walks and eats healthy food. She has become spiritually aware. She states she refuses to be sorry for herself. She states that she respects Mind/ Body connections and acts appropriately.

Anne adds: "You should have a proper MD whom you believe and who can help you with your mental attitude: "I have MS, not MS has me". Spiritual side first; thank you God for what I have not, what I have not. Like in a puzzle all fit together. Spiritual then Mental and Physical".
